Data, Data, Data for the PLC at Heart

PLC – Oh Yeah!

As of lately, there has been a BIG push for a PLC education-wide.

Why not?!
A PLC (Professional Learning Community) is one in which all educators work together to help the learning community grown, both positively and academically.  Success is show through student achievement (and staff achievement).  Though this doesn't necessarily mean that staff is ‘achieving' data numbers that help them ‘keep their jobs'.  Each level of education, from grade-level to school wide, even as high as the district level, is committing to setting reasonable goals they would like to achieve.
A PLC can be a wonderful thing if you're truly committed to jumping on board and giving it your all.  Ensuring that your end goal is student growth and achievement.  It is worth checking out if your school is not already involved! http://www.allthingsplc.info/

Data and then some:

Every year, as an educator, there is a push for data.  Can you effectively show student growth and achievement, or figure out what your students need next week during instruction?  Testing will be coming …. again …. because let's be honest, it feels like we test once a month these days.
I truly believe if you have a firm grasp on what you will administer from day 1, prepping for data results can be simple.  Here's an example of what my team and I did:
At the beginning of the school year we knew that we would give a cluster assessment to our students, to test their knowledge of a variety of skills, including those they should have been exposed to in fourth grade.
The assessment was about 22 questions long and ranged from main idea to poetry, also including a few figurative language questions.
In order to collect data quickly and efficiently, I used this idea created by Tonya's Treats for Teachers!
As you can see, after the students recorded all of their incorrect answers, my teammate and I quickly calculated our results.  The left side shows individual proficiency.  while the bottom shows proficiency per standard assessed.
Based on the level of percentages we know what we desperately need to focus on, as well as what students need direct one-on-one instruction.
Grab the data and measurement strips here to have your students help you with your data!
Enjoy!
