Setting Easy Goals For the New Year Doesn’t Have To Be So Hard!

I find one of the toughest things to do, whether it be the beginning of the school year or coming back from break is to remain laser-focused. I always feel like there are a million things on my plate (and it's a miracle it hasn't shattered into a million pieces). But if there's one thing that's certain when I set monthly goals for myself, I feel like I have more I can achieve – and honestly, that makes me feel a little better just knowing this alone.

How can goal setting be so “easy”?

I'm sure you're like me, and tons of other folks, you LOVE making to-do lists. In a way, these are things we need to do and check off. Goal setting can be just the same but a little more focused on your actual lessons, as well as giving students the ability to set goals. You can be working simultaneously with each other.

A few steps to get you started:

  1. Write down your goals and review them each month.
  2. Create goals by subject and/or behavior.
  3. Ensure your goals are realistic and obtainable.
  4. Make sure your goals are measurable.
  5. Don't forget to celebrate the goals you achieve!

You don't have to stop listing the things you need to do, but make sure they are specific and you WILL be able to complete them! I also suggest having both annual and monthly goals to achieve, I mean why not?! However, I strongly suggest that if you are not used to setting goals, start very slow. Maybe focus on an annual goal or one goal every other month.

When setting goals for students and yourself, using statements that begin with “I will . . .” are a key stepping stone. Couple that with measuring your goals and using sentence starters like “I will know I have met my goal when . . .”. BOOM = done!

This is something you can easily teach your coworkers and students to do! BUT (and this is key) please don't forget to celebrate your achievements! Who doesn't love rewards for hard work? After all, you deserve it!

Where will you start? Is this something you will wait to do over the summer, at the beginning of the school year, or after winter break? Let me know!

Are you ready to implement your very own goal-setting plan for both yourself and your students? You can try out this full guide to see if it’s for you (spoiler alert: it is! and it's FULLLLL of digital and editable templates, too!).
